4 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile
January 3, 2022
You’ve likely spent time thinking about your goals for 2022. While you might plan to save money or exercise more, is a healthy smile on your New Year’s resolutions list? Research shows your oral health affects your general wellness. Certain dental issues can increase your risk of several health concerns, like heart disease. Not to mention, the health and appearance of your teeth and gums can affect your self-esteem and how others view you. If you haven’t given your smile the attention it deserves, it’s never too late to recommit to your oral health. Here are 4 simple New Year’s resolutions to achieve a healthy, beautiful smile in 2022.
1. Brush At Least Twice Daily
No one wants to head out the door in the morning with dragon breath, but you need to brush your teeth before bed, too. The American Dental Association recommends brushing for 2 full minutes in the morning and night, if not after every meal. Brushing removes cavity-causing bacteria, plaque, and food particles that can compromise your smile. Although you might be tired after a long day, get in the habit of brushing before climbing into bed.
2. Floss Every Night
Your toothbrush is your first line of defense against preventable dental issues; however, it can’t clean everywhere in your mouth, like between your teeth. Flossing is the only way to remove plaque buildup to keep your gums healthy. Although gum disease is preventable, it’s the leading cause of tooth loss. The infection can also enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of various health problems, like cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetic complications. You can protect your mouth and body by using high-quality dental floss to clean between each tooth daily.
3. Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year
The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. Often, people believe they don’t need to see a dentist until after a problem has arisen, but you shouldn’t wait until you have a toothache to schedule an appointment. Routine cleanings and checkups stop common oral health issues from occurring to preserve your natural smile. You’ll also lower your long-term dental expenses because you’ll avoid needing a costly procedure later. Research shows every $1 spent on prevention can save up to $50 on restorative care.
4. Eat a Healthy Diet
The foods you eat can either help or harm your smile. It’s best to limit surgery, starchy, or acidic foods and drinks because they can erode your enamel. Your dentist will also suggest limiting foods that are hard or sticky.
You can achieve lasting oral health with a commitment to your smile. Start the new year off right with a trip to your dentist for a cleaning and checkup.
